So I've spent a couple of days making up this face expression chart

And felt ready to see how the new sheep look in a full cartoon.

As this one is based on New Year Resolutions, it was probably better published sooner rather than later because of course they're forgotten a couple of weeks in. Well I don't expect Maureen's resolution would be; she's the only one  who'll be keeping her resolution come December. Or come February come to that.

  1. You can probably go a bit further with some of those expressions, try making delightful's pupils bigger, and annoyed's smaller. The eyelids certainly do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Perhaps the ears need to be included!!

It's a good starting point and then what you'll find is that you stop using them after a while because you'll know which elements you need to give the correct expression. When I had my alien kit I just had a number of mouths and eyes that I could use mix-and-match, but I soon found I needed more.

It's a good starting point, and definitely a strong step in the direction of colour. And the colours work well together.

  2. You're right! I should be using the ears too! Hadn't thought of varying the pupil size, logic says that they should be the same size throughout. I'll give that a go.

    1. In the real world pupil size doesnt change much, but it's useful in cartooning to exaggerate. (it's about expressions rather than logic, that's why eyebrows don't have to be connected to the head)

  4. That's going a bit too far >_<

Shit - If I'd realised I could achieve far better facial expressions using a couple of keys on my keyboard I wouldn't have wasted all that time!!! :-(
