lots of feet

Rather than draw another sheep yesterday, I tidied this one up and tried lots of different feet / hooves.

For me there's a clear winner, I'll be interested to hear whether you think the same.

  1. An interesting study..

I like 2, but looks like she has bare feet.

3 seems best overall, has that look of safety matches but I like it.

5 and 6 remind me more of pigs legs, and the last one seems more like horses hooves. The curvy legs dont feel quite right.

  2. Thank you! Yes, 2 is a tidied up version of the original idea I drew the other day. Bare feet is what I was after, whether it works or not I'm not sure. And yes, 3 is the one I'm inclined to go for. It's in keeping with the simplicity of the face. I actually like the curvy legs, if you look at only 3 and 7 (ignoring the hooves) it does look as if 3 is younger, 7 is older. I may experiment with this a little further - thinner legs and bigger head for the younger sheep, curvy legs for the older ones.

  3. I meant 1 was a tidied up version of the original, 2 is a variation on it. Why can't I edit my comments?

  4. I like the idea of introducing individuality into the sheep, although it does move away from the notion that all sheep look the same.

There's great scope for building recognisable characters using ideas such as variation in legs, but you probably want to experiment in changing the faces to match.

If you're happy with this style the the next step would be to rough out your characters and see if you can make them recognisable.

  6. You're right about individuality removing that joke that all sheep look the same. I've thought hard about this, and I think I need to steer clear of recognisable characters because a number of my cartoons wouldn't work unless the sheep are identical.

But I'm only suggesting using the straight legs in a lamb, more curved in a ewe. And I already differentiate between the lambs and ewes, so that should be ok.

  7. typos - the only options is to delete and post again, but that's pointless because the other person gets the notification emails and curiosity leads to reading them all to see what's changed....
